The appeal to human rights becomes trite

As the Pope has pointed out, the language of ‘human rights’ has now been downgraded in public discourse to the special pleading of every interest-group.

My two cents

How true. A great way of manipulating others (to make them submit to your whims) is to label your political agenda in terms of rights. Pushed to its logical conclusion, the trick is to approach the United Nations to enshrine it as a “human right”. Our duties precede our rights, and both of them are set out in the Bible—not in the mind of man and his relativistic make-it-up-as-you-go-along approach to politics.
