The fast success of the Home School Legal Defense Association

In 1983 two evangelical attorneys, Michael Farris and Mike Smith, founded the organisation to defend the rights of home-school parents. They fought to remove requirements that parents be certified to teach their own children. Through an impressive run of legal battles and political lobbying, they managed to make home-schooling legal in all 50 states within 10 years.

My two cents

I take my hat off to the Home School Legal Defense Association—to think they could have pulled that off within 10 years is great. Here I was thinking that the only legal victories in this generation were those against Christianity. I also like the graph on the original webpage showing the estimated growth in children being homsechooled since 1990. I also wonder if someone should do a documentary on the pioneers of homeschooling (i.e. those who practiced it in the 1980s or earlier).

  1. My mom started homeschooling me in 1984. She was always nervous that someone would “turn us in.” I think it was legal then in Missouri, but she knew that a lot of people looked down on it and figured they would jump at the chance to get us in trouble. So we usually stayed home during the school day. I’m lucky because now, homeschooling is everywhere. I can take my son on field trips, to the park, or grocery shopping in the middle of the day, and it doesn’t seem to bother anyone!

  2. Thanks for your marvelous posting on home schooling! I truly enjoyed reading it, you can be a great author. I will always bookmark your blog and definitely will come back sometime soon. I want to encourage you to definitely continue your great posts on the importance of education, have a nice weekend!
